St John the Evangelist, Hook, nr Basingstoke
Built in the 1930’s, the building was designed by Sir Edward Maufe who later designed Guildford Cathedral. Replacing a mediocre pipe organ raised up in a small gallery in the chancel, the new drawstop console is positioned at the front of the nave. With speakers positioned in the old organ chamber, the organist is now able to hear the choir properly and provide a suitable accompaniment. The 28 speaking stops include a fine solo reed playable from the swell.
“I write to let you know how delighted I am with the Wyvern organ you installed in St John’s last autumn. For a Church that values Liturgy done sensitively, imaginatively and to a high standard, this organ is a superb asset. It has a range of colour and mood that complements the dramatic range of worship, from splendour and excitement at major events, to a wonderful shimmering pianissimo at key moments where an atmosphere of quietness and intensity is needed. We are able to do far more with this instrument than we ever could with the very limited pipe organ.
The quality of the workmanship of the console is of the highest standards. It has been beautifully shaped, crafted and finished. It is discreet and fits the building very well. Overall, I can give it an unreserved endorsement for any Church which wants an exceptional quality of sound and, like all of us, looks for a very competitive price.”
